CNN —At least 26 people have been killed in an explosion in the town of Finote Selam in northwestern Ethiopia, amid heavy fighting between government forces and a local militia group. Tenaw told CNN that people reported hearing only one explosion, the cause of which is unclear. The Ethiopian government declared a six-month state of emergency in the Amhara region on August 4 after days of clashes. The United Nations “called on all sides to respect human rights and take steps to deescalate the situation,” noting that “previous states of emergency have been accompanied by violations of human rights” in a statement Friday. CNN has reached out to the federal government, the Ethiopian National Defense Forces, and the Amhara regional government for comment.

A website using United Nations branding with the slogan “New World Order” is not a legitimate UN initiative, as a viral video claims, but an independent third-party campaign. The clip seen by more than 10,000 users on social media here claims the United Nations “New World Order” website is “official”. A “general notice” on the site unnwo.org/ reads: “The United Nations New World Order Project is an independent global initiative campaigning for a new world order at the United Nations, and worldwide. “The views expressed herein are solely those of the United Nations New World Order Project, and do not reflect the views of the United Nations, or any other entity.”The official website of the UN can be seen at the address “un.org” www.un.org/en/ . Wennesland said the month saw “a spike in fatal violence” that has 2022 on track to be the deadliest in the West Bank. More than 125 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli-Palestinian fighting in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this year. Ongoing Israeli arrest raids in the West Bank pose a serious challenge to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority. UNITED NATIONS — The president of the Marshall Islands on Tuesday welcomed what he called progress toward a new association agreement with the United States, but said it is vital to better address the legacy of U.S. nuclear testing and climate change. President David Kabua made the remarks at the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he also appealed more broadly for help and action to address climate change, to which his low-lying Pacific island nation is especially vulnerable. The Marshall Islands and other Pacific island states, the Federated States of Micronesia and Palau, signed agreements known as compacts with the United States in the late 1980s that give the U.S. defense responsibility and the right to military bases in return for economic support. “While we have shared goals and a strong partnership with the United States of America, we also have grave development challenges and essential needs,” Kabua said. “We welcome recent progress with the United States of America towards a renewed Compact of Free Association and with it a targeted trust fund,” he said.
